Peggy Flores explains that shape, placement of features, and proportion are key steps in making self-portraits and she demonstrates these. A simple self-portrait is drawn using a mirror image or a photograph. After copies are made, special painting and drawing techniques can result in unique self-portraits which include: wet-on-wet watercolor is the basis for fractured self-portraits when black pen lines are drawn around the dried puddled paint. In another demonstration, contours are drawn on a simple self-portrait and colored watercolor pencil is used within the spaces. Tiny designs such as spirals, broken lines, and crosshatching can be drawn over the colored shapes. Other demonstrations show how self-portraits can be artistic and different.
